Proprietor and senior designer Lizi Newbury started her floristry career at the age of 15 in Kent after falling in love with all things flowers during work experience. In 2000 she and her family moved to Cornwall, where Lizi attended Duchy College at Rosewarne in Camborne to achieve her NVQ qualifications to the highest possible standard. During, and following, her studies she continued working in a top quality florist in Truro, where she quickly became regarded as a valuable member of the team.

Her passion for flowers and eye for design has enabled Lizi to teach, demonstrate and judge floristry and, after being headhunted for the original Wheal Sara Flowers team, in 2006 at the age of just 21 she became sole proprietor, and the business has blossomed ever since. In the future she hopes to create sister shops of Wheal Sara across the county!

What is your favourite flower?

That is the toughest question they're all so lovely! but the one that has jumped out for me has to be the peony such gorgeous full blossoms and delicate scent truly amazing!

What is your favourite plant?

It has got to be the agapanthus, the foliage of the plant never looks much but when they produce  there amazing big blue flowers they are so eye catching and a real winner here in Cornwall they're everywhere!

What is your most memorable date working at Wheal Sara Flowers?

No such date in specific but each time we get a thank you from a happy Bride and Groom or a compliment on how lovely the shop looks that really makes me smile! I just love making people happy and doing the job of my dreams, it's that simple really!

Lauren Thomas
Freelance florist and senior designer

After completing my National Diploma in Art and design I decided to combine this with my love for flowers, I landed myself a work experience placement 6 years ago, and I have never looked back! After being trained by in my opinion the most talented  florist in the South West I worked my way up to head florist status. Each day brings new challenges but this job is my passion and I hope to continue on my floristry adventure for many years to come!

What is your favourite flower?

Such a hard question there are just too many to choose from! But I have whittled it down to a dendrobium orchid!

What is your favourite plant?

An easy one. Jasmine, my gran had the most amazing Jasmine plant growing in her garden, I love the foliage and incredible scent of the blossom, simply beautiful.

What is your most memorable date working at Wheal Sara Flowers?

There is no specific date! Each Christmas, Valentines and Mothers day where we all work for days and nights without sleep are some of the happiest and funniest times! And obviously doing on-site weddings. I just get such a buzz from all the hard work we have put into it and seeing our amazing designs in place.

Lin Thomas
Freelance florist and horticultural advisor

After studying horticulture at Dutch College my passion for all flowers and plants came to the fore.
A direction was needed to combine my art and design background and visual merchandising experience with my new found knowledge! Floristry! Lizi offered me a work placement to help build her team and here I am enjoying every minute!!

What is your favourite flower?

Oh it has to be the Rose, from the old cottage garden favourites with their incredible heady scent to the huge range available at the florist today.

What is your favourite plant?

The honeysuckle outside my backdoor! From fresh scented flowers through to deep red berries it is just perfect for the garden.

What is your most memorable day working at Wheal Sara Flowers?

Each day is so different! It is always the busy times that are fun, despite the hard work, Creating, thinking on your feet and working into the early hours is a challenge! The pleasure is the praise from clients and bringing a smile to your face as you have created just what they dreamed of and more.
